John Reis, a longtime coworker, verified Froberg’s passing.
At the age of 55, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, and Obits’ singer and guitarist Rick Froberg went suddenly.
The news of Froberg’s passing was announced on Instagram by John Reis, who was Froberg’s former bandmate in Hot Snakes and Drive Like Jehu. On June 30 at about 11 p.m., Rick passed away abruptly from natural causes. He improved his life through his work. He appreciated his buddies more than he did music and the arts. He will always be recognized for his originality, wisdom, and capacity to make the world more beautiful. Greetings, Rick. You will always be missed by me.
The post-hardcore band Pitchfork was established by Froberg and Reis in the late 1980s. After that, they started the emo rock band Drive Like Jehu, and in 1994, Interscope Records released Yank Crime, their major label debut.
Reis momentarily placed Drive Like Jehu on hold in the middle of the 1990s so he could focus on his other band, Rocket from the Crypt. By the end of the decade, Reis had established his own record company, Swami Records, and he had reconnected with Froberg to form the post-hardcore band Hot Snakes.
Suicide Violence and Audit in Progress are two of the three albums that Hot Snakes released between 2000 and 2004. Before coming back together in 2018 to record their fourth album, Jericho Sirens, the band took a break.
Froberg founded the band Obits in 2006. In the years 2009 through 2013, they released three albums.
For a series of live performances, including one at Coachella in 2015, Froberg and Reis revived Drive Like Jehu in 2014.
Froberg was a gifted graphic artist who also produced artwork for his bands, Rocket from the Crypt and Swami Records.
