Barry Newman, best known for his role in the classic action movie The Vanishing Point, reportedly died on May 11 in a hospital in New York City, according to several sources.

Elderly was the 92-year-old Emmy-nominated star. There hasn’t been any other information released about his passing.

The still-living Angela, Newman’s wife, confirmed her husband’s demise to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. His friends reportedly confirmed the news on social media as well, as reported by Deadline.

In a tribute she gave to Newman, Angela said that he “was a rock for so many people, whose spirit he lifted and allowed to be free.” He was definitely a light for so many because of his great, hilarious sense of humor that made everything and everyone happier.

The Boston-born actor, who has been on stage, screen, and television, is well known for playing the title role in the 1974 legal drama Petrocelli. He decided to pursue acting after meeting Lee Strasberg as a student at Waltham, Massachusetts’ Brandeis University. After graduating, he continued his acting studies with a renowned acting professor in New York City.

Following Daylight with Sylvester Stallone in 1996, Bowfinger with Steve Martin in 1999, and The Limey with the late Peter Fonda in the same year, Newman went on to star in a number of films.

Numerous websites claim that Newman was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in 2009, which limited his opportunities to perform. His most recent project was Finding Hannah, a 2022 film that was shot in 2019.

The same year, Newman talked about how one of Steven Spielberg’s favorite films, 1971’s Vanishing Point, gave him a boost in terms of his initial rise to fame. In London, where the cult movie made its debut, “people lined up around the block to see it,” according to Newman, as per THR, the movie did not immediately become popular in the United States.

“In England, I was a hero, but in America, I was just a guy picking up his bags at the airport.”
