John Goodman, a well-known performer, turned 70. Before making appearances in films like The Flinstones, Blues Brothers, Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, etc., the American star of The Borrowers had previously battled depression as a result of some distressing personal experiences.
Throughout his career, Goodman has been transparent about his issues with alcohol. The prominent person spent more than 30 years battling the sickness. It made a big difference in his life.
He described his drinking as having been “terrible.”
He claimed that Goodman had numerous opportunities to drown. Not really an overdose, more of a mishap, I suppose.
The well-known individual stopped drinking in 2007, but he acknowledged that it was difficult to refrain from drinking every day. He eventually started “having dreams” where he was looking for bourbon and drinking it.
I shouldn’t be doing that, he recalled thinking.
I will then respond, “Well, that’s fine!” You frequently engage in that! You constantly take it! No, I don’t, I’ll say when I eventually open my eyes. I was at first terrified by [the voices]. They are now just funny.
To avoid coming across triggers, Goodman stated, “I want to keep going to locations where there is good reinforcement. Because, if I truly wanted to, I don’t think anything on God’s green Earth could keep me from drinking.
He also acknowledged that his drinking was impacted by the “constant dread of unemployment” that comes with being an actor.
All it is is alcohol. He admitted to having a drinking problem. I would continue to drink. Finding any defense is part of being an alcoholic. Nevertheless, my life has been stressful and unpleasant. I chose a job that requires constant strain, and by abusing alcohol and other drugs, I’ve made it worse. Furthermore, layoffs were a constant possibility.
For some reason, I was merely in denial of what I was doing to myself, he reasoned. Given how I appear, it’s a wonder that I’ve ever been employed. While walking, I appeared to be having a heart attack.
According to Goodman, performing on stage is an entirely different experience. That felt like being “blasted out of a cannon,” he claimed.
“You get an adrenaline rush, and once that’s over, you find yourself exhausted at the end of the evening,” the Roseanne actress remarked.
He claimed that producing a film was unique. It took many days of waiting. He observed that most movies drag on.
The condition also frequently caused the renowned stage actor to forget his lines.
He said, ‘I didn’t like it. After a few drinks, the lines gradually faded away. It reminded me of a snowball, too. It only reinforced my lack of faith in my ability to even learn lines. I was squandering my energy and hurting myself more than anything else. All I need to do is maintain my composure, acknowledge that there will be queues, and develop patience.
Along with this constant struggle, he was also plagued by a crippling depression every day.
“A physiological thing, a brain thing… [a sense of] overall discontent with everything,” was how he put it. Nothing looks to be in the right, thus I don’t want to take any action. I have no interest in anything, even if I should be doing something else. It’s just ridiculous.
Goodman, who has been married to Anna Beth Hartzog since 1989, assisted him in 2007 in establishing a healthy lifestyle.
